Data Scientist

Ecotope’s innovative research team tests and evaluates emerging technologies that push the limits of energy-efficiency and decarbonization, demonstrates them in real world applications, and develops guidelines for best installation practices.

We seek a seasoned data scientist and energy modeler to join our team! You’ll expand and improve upon existing sizing and energy simulation tools (the Ecosizer and Ecosim), process and analyze measurement and verification data from various equipment installations, create energy models and databases, and design and test software.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Gather raw data from M&V sites and/or laboratory tests, largely pertaining to residential and commercial heat pump water heaters, but also including air source heat pumps for heating and cooling.
    • Manipulate the data: clean, aggregate, and process the data
    • Create databases that can be queried, accessed easily, and displayed and summarized
    • Create models for equipment and system configuration informed by lab performance data, validated against field data
    • Set up continuous integrations and deployment (CI/CD)
    • Design and implement test procedures for software; oversee the release of and maintain software
    • Conduct parametric energy modeling using software to answer scientific questions and optimize system performance using advanced algorithms
    • Develop energy models of residential homes to inform state energy codes and power plans
    • Write query APIs to harvest data from external databases
    • Write software documentation
    • Manage projects with an eye to scope, budget, timeline, and client satisfaction
    • Mentor and train other staff members on data pipeline, analysis, visualization, automation, and software development

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

    • Advanced experience with Python.
    • Extensive experience with backend web development in Python (Django, Flask).
    • Experience with version tracking software: GitHub, Bitbucket, Gitlab, etc.
    • Ability to communicate effectively and clearly
    • Must be self-motivated and collaborative

Preferred qualifications include:

    • Knowledge of Ruby and Stata a bonus. Knowledge of C or C++ is helpful.
    • Solid grasp of physics, specifically heat transfer and thermodynamics.
    • Experience with energy modeling.
    • Background in mechanical engineering, systems, and equipment. Experience working with heat pump water heaters is helpful, not required.
