Hopeworks – Net Positive Low-Income Housing

What We Did and How

The Hopeworks project in Everett, WA provides 65 units of low-income housing over a commercial food service production and training facility. This net-positive energy project was a case study in the Living Building Challenge Affordable Housing Pilot Program. The residential portion of the building was awarded a grant from the WA State Department of Commerce Housing Trust Fund for Ultra High Energy Efficient (UHEE) housing. The grant funded the cost of the 200KW solar array on the roof and carport which generates 5% more energy than the residential portion of the building consumes in a year. Ecotope provided the energy efficiency consulting and modeling, solar system optimization, and the mechanical engineering. The project was also funded by the Bonneville Power Administration to demonstrate emerging energy efficient technologies including CO2 heat pump water heaters and through-wall ceramic core heat recovery ventilators. This is expected to be the most energy efficient multifamily building in the region.
